What to expect in your first session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, so let's make the first session feel less like the unknown.
Before we begin
Everything starts with a free 15-minute consultation. It is a low-pressure conversation to see whether we are the right fit, no commitment, no pressure, and no expectation that you share anything deeply personal.
Your first full session
We move at your pace. You do not need to have the "right" words or a tidy story. We will talk about what brought you here, what you are hoping for, and what a good outcome would feel like. From there, we build a plan together.
Why the fit matters, the research
The single most-studied predictor of whether therapy works is not the technique, it is the relationship. A meta-analysis of 295 studies covering more than 30,000 clients found that the strength of the therapeutic alliance consistently predicts outcomes across approaches, diagnoses, and countries. See: The alliance in adult psychotherapy: a meta-analytic synthesis (Flückiger et al., 2018). That is exactly why we start with a fit call instead of paperwork.
And if you are wondering whether online sessions water that down: they do not. Randomized-trial meta-analyses find video-delivered therapy as effective as in-person care, for anxiety disorders and across a range of conditions, with equivalent working alliance and satisfaction: Telehealth versus face-to-face psychotherapy: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (JMIR Mental Health, 2022).
Case in point
A composite from our work: a client booked her consult after two years of "I'll deal with it after this next busy season." Her biggest fear was being judged for waiting so long. What she remembers from session one is that we laughed twice, she cried once, and she left with one small practice, not a diagnosis, not a lecture. The season was still busy. She came back anyway.
You are in the right place
Healing begins in a safe, supportive relationship. That is what this space is for, and many clients feel meaningful movement between the 6th and 12th session as trust and momentum build.
